GREAT FALLS, Mont. – Seven wrestlers from the University of Providence men's wrestling team will compete at the
NAIA National Championships this weekend in Wichita, Kansas.
TJ Baun (141 lbs.),
Shonn Roberts (149 lbs.),
Casey Dobson (157 lbs.),
Jordan Komac (165 lbs.),
Hayden Schrull (184 lbs.),
John Hensley (197 lbs.), and
Justin Harbison (285 lbs.) will all be making the trip after earning a spot after their
performance in the Cascade Collegiate Conference Tournament two weeks ago.
"It's been a great two-week break," head coach
Steve Komac said. "The kids got refreshed. We took a couple days off right after conference just to keep them refreshed. We shortened up the practices but yet we're still getting really good efforts during practice. The attitude that is coming into the room right now has been outstanding. The kids are excited to go and they are excited to compete."
Komac has used the practice time to improve on small adjustments with each individual wrestler to give them edge come time for the competition. Each wrestler has their own unique style, so Komac has encouraged each wrestler to play to their strengths at the tournament.
"One thing we've focused on throughout the year is letting people wrestle in their style and then making them better with their style," Komac said. "We let them wrestle the way they like to wrestle. Wild things happen at National Championships so we'll give our best effort and see how it goes. We feel very prepared. There isn't anything that we would do different. We all feel pretty positive about where we're at."
Komac believes all seven wrestlers are capable of finishing in the Top 8 and being named All-Americans, which could lead to a big team placement for the Argos.
"We truly believe that all seven wrestlers that are going are capable of being All-Americans," Komac said. "If you have seven All-Americans you will contend for trophies at the National Tournament. Not many teams can put up seven All-Americans. We're going to go in there with the effort and expectations of belief in ourselves that we're going to try and get seven All-Americans."
