Darko-Kelly Named Conference Player of the Week for 7th Time in his Career

WHITEFISH, Mont. – The Frontier Conference announced Monday that University of Providence men's basketball player Zaccheus Darko-Kelly was named the Frontier Conference Player of the Week.

In four games this week, Darko-Kelly, who was named the Frontier Conference Preseason Player of the Year, averaging 16.8 points, 11.5 rebounds, 6.5 assists, 2.8 blocks and 1.8 steals. He's currently shooting 51.1% from the field, 38.5% from beyond the arc and a perfect 16/16 from the free throw line.

Darko-Kelly opened the season against Montana Tech one assist short of a triple-double, scoring 14 points, grabbing 12 points and dishing out nine assists. On Sunday's win over Carroll, he was one point short of a triple-double, recording nine points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists.

"You worry about how hard everybody has been working in the offseason," head coach Steve Keller said. "He obviously put in the time. He stepped right up. Obviously, his scoring is down a little bit. We got some other guys that share that load now. The second half of the game last night he won the game with all the assists he had. It shows the player that he is that he scores nine points and was the major factor in the outcome of the game."

This is the 7th time that Darko-Kelly was named the conference player of the week in his career. He won the award six times last season, including a late-season stretch where he won the award three times in a row; he became first men's basketball player to do so. He also won the NAIA National Player of the Week Award three times in a row, becoming the first player in NAIA history to do so.

"If he's not the best player in the country, he's in the top five," Keller said. "That's why he's up there. He's improved on his rebounding, he's improved his timing for blocking shots. You see it in the stats. He's raised his level."

Currently, Darko-Kelly leads the 14th-ranked Argos in all statistical categories. He leads the Frontier Conference in every category except for field goal percentage, where he's third, and scoring, where he's fourth.

"He's a special player," Keller said. "He knows he can't do it by himself. He trusts his teammates and gets them the ball when they're open. He's very unselfish."

The #14 Argos went 4-0 on the week. They'll host Rocky Mountain College on Saturday and Sunday this weekend.

As of now, the Frontier Conference is under a no-spectator policy due to COVID-19. No fans will be permitted to the McLaughlin Center for the games this weekend. You can stream all games FOR FREE at www.upargos.com.
