Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Argos Stifle Another Montana Tech Comeback Attempt

BUTTE, Mont. – The #14 University of Providence men's basketball team survived another wild game for the second night in a row, defeating Montana Tech 94-89 Tuesday night.

For the second night in a row the Argos got up to a large first-half lead, only to see the Orediggers slowly but surely cut it down. Up by 19 early in the second half, the game was tied at 86 a piece with one minute remaining.

Uzan got a steal that led to a Zaccheus Darko-Kelly field goal to put the game at 90-86 with 30 seconds left, but things got interesting when a technical foul was called on the Argos on a field goal attempt, awarding the Orediggers four free throws. They went three of four from the line, allowing Cap Uzan to hit two free throws and seal the game.

"We played really well to get a 19 point lead," head coach Steve Keller said. "We did the same thing as we did the other night. I kept telling them 'find a way, find a way.' We found a way to win."

Darko-Kelly recorded his second double-double of the season, notching 25 points and pulling down 16 rebounds. He was one of five players in double-digits; Marcus Stephens dropped 22, Cap Uzan had 18 points and 6 rebounds, Jaxen Hashley had 12 points and 5 rebounds and Davien Harris-Williams recorded 11. The Orediggers were led by Sindou Diallo (18 pts.), Derrius Collins (17 pts.) and Nate Ward (15 pts.)

"Everybody had a hand in it," Keller said. "Lots of guys made big shots. The biggest thing is we got to the free throw line a bit more."

The Argos not only got to the free line tonight, but made them when they got there. The team shot 32 free throws tonight, making 27 out of them. They also shot well from beyond the arc, hitting eleven threes at a 47.8% clip.

Coming away with two tightly contested wins gives Keller confidence about his team, as they set their sights for their next game against Carroll on Saturday, Jan. 9 at 7 p.m.

"We're learning," he said. "We got a lot to learn. We have to keep our composure in a few areas and we'll get that figured out. It's a great thing when you can learn lessons and win."

The Frontier Conference is still adhering to a no-spectator policy. The University of Providence athletic department will stream the game free of charge at upargos.com.
