GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The #25
th ranked University of Providence women's basketball will host their first home game on the season Saturday night, taking on #6 Carroll at 5:00 p.m. This will be the first home game for the Argos (1-1) since Feb. 29.
"We couldn't be more excited to play in our home gym," head coach
Bill Himmelberg said. "Just being able to get basketball back in here is a big thing for our kids and our campus. We're pretty excited."
The Argos opened the season on the road earlier this week, facing a stout Montana Tech team. The Argos, led by
Frontier Conference Preseason Player of the Year Parker Esary,
topped the Orediggers on Monday, but
came up just short of completing the sweep the following night.
"We learned we definitely can score the basketball," Himmelberg said. "We can play defense in spurts. We need to be in a bit better shape to execute fully at the level we need to the whole time."
The Argos were led by the two-headed monster of Esary and point guard
Emilee Maldonado, who are both averaging 17.5 points per game so far this season. Esary is averaging a double-double, grabbing 11 rebounds a game. Maldonado is averaging 4.5 assists per game and three steals a game.
The Argos have a plethora of other players who can score as well. Junior
Reed Hazard scored 14 points on Monday night, while
Kerstyn Pimperton came off the bench on Tuesday night to score 16 points. Freshman
Maddy Dixon scored 14 points in her career debut.
"We need a bunch of different who can score," Himmelberg said. "We like to share it. We're not afraid to let different people be the high scorer on different nights. They're going to try and take someone away so it's important that other people are able to knock down shots."
The Argos will have their hands full against a tough Carroll team. The Fighting Saints (10-1, 4-0) have three players in double figures, including University of Montana transfer Jamie Pickens. The Saints are known for their defense and rebounding ranking 7
th nationally in defensive rebounds, 13
th in rebound margin, and 14
th in points allowed.
"We're going to have to control the boards a little bit and control our turnovers," Himmelberg said. "They play pressure defense. We're going to be able to get good shots, control the boards and control the turnovers if we're going to have a chance."
The game on Saturday will not be open to the general public due to COVID-19. All University of Providence home athletic events will be streamed free of charge on www.upargos.com
