GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence men's soccer team suffered another heartbreaking loss Friday afternoon, falling to Oregon Tech 1-0 at Argo Field.
Jake Mitchell scored off a penalty kick in the 60
th minute to record the game-deciding goal. Though the Argos (1-4-1, 1-2-1) had multiple chances late, they couldn't convert as the Owls (7-1, 3-1) secured the victory.
"It was an unfortunate loss at home," interim head coach
Michael Rahn said. "We kind of gave them the game unfortunately. We played with them pretty even in the first half."
The two teams played a balanced game, with both squads recording 12 shots on the day. The Owls were more accurate however, recording six shots on target while the Argos had three.
Mika Lukas Lankhof and
Tomeu Nebot Schmalfeld led the Argos with three shots a piece. Lankhof,
George Almeida and
Kolby Hayes each had a shot on target.
Evan Scholes recorded five saves on the day.
"Defensively, we're pretty good but we seem to still do a lot of reactionary stuff," Rahn said. "Offensively, we're still not creating quality chances. We're not executing our restarts very effectively."
The loss marks the fifth game this season that has been decided by just one goal, with the Argos going 1-4-1 in those efforts. They'll have to rebound quickly, as they take on a stout Southern Oregon team, who is receiving votes in the NAIA National Poll.
"All these games are going to be tight like that," Rahn said. "We got a big game tomorrow. We just have to get better. We're looking to get a result tomorrow against one of the top teams in the league. It's going to be another good challenge for our team."
Tomorrow's game against the Raiders (8-0, 4-0) will begin at 1:00 p.m. at Argo Field.
