GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence men's soccer team handed Southern Oregon their first loss of the season Saturday, defeating the Raiders 2-0.
"I'm happy for the guys," interim head coach
Michael Rahn said. "I think they came together and played the way they can. We finally scored two goals in open play. It was a great team effort. What a great win for us."
Tomeu Nebot got things started for the Argos (2-4-1, 2-2-1), scoring a goal in the seventh minute to give the team a 1-0 lead. Up one at the half, the Argos made it a two-goal game when Nebot found
Jack Rimstad on a cross for the goal to solidify the victory.
"Tomeu had a beautiful first goal," Rahn said. "He cut inside and beat the goalie. Jack scored right at the beginning of the half to put the game away. It was an example of great teamwork. Tomeu was driving down the right side, crossed it into the middle. A couple guys had some whacks at it but Jack ended up with it on the far post and beat the goalie."
The Raiders (8-1, 4-1) outshot the Argos 21-5 on the day. Of the Argos five shots, three of which were on target.
Mika Lukas Lankhof led the team with two shots, one of which was on target.
Evan Scholes was in the net for the Argos, recording six saves.
"We didn't give them too much," Rahn said. "They were trying to get one in the goal, but our defensive line was incredible. Evan was huge for us today. He was really solid back there. They were dumping balls in the box and he just collected them and handled the situation for us."
The win is a great confidence boost for the Argos, who are coming off a
tight loss to Oregon Tech yesterday. The win puts the team at 7 points in the
Cascade Collegiate Conference standings, tied for 6
th in the conference with Carroll.
"It really gets us back in contention for a playoff spot in the conference tournament," Rahn said. "It's a great boost. We knew we had the potential and we just weren't getting it going. We do have the talent and capability. We just have to believe we can do it and put ourselves in position to make it happen. I think going forward we'll be able to always have the belief that we can beat anybody."
The team will hope to use the momentum next weekend, when they host College of Idaho and Eastern Oregon. Both games, which will take place Friday and Saturday, will begin at 1:00 p.m. at Argo Field.
