Men's Wrestling Announces 2021-22 Recruiting Class

GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence men's wrestling program announced their official recruiting class for the upcoming 2021-22 season on Monday. 

The class features a total of 16 student-athletes that have joined the program. 13 of the newcomers are freshman, while three have transferred from other schools. Eight of the newcomers are from Montana, with three coming from Great Falls.

"We are very excited about his year's class of recruits," head coach Steve Komac said. "We have several accomplished high school standouts in this group as well as a couple very quality transfer students that can make an impact right away. This group of student-athletes showed great character in their previous programs with a good balance of academic and athletic success. We're really excited about them."

The Argos will begin their season with an intra-squad scrimmage on Nov. 2 in the McLaughlin Center. Their first competition will be Nov. 6 at Northwest in Powell, Wyo.

Birdwell joins the program after transferring from Campbell University, where he wrestled for the Camels. He is originally from Fergus High School in Lewistown, Mont. where he wrestled and ran cross country. He was a four-time state finalist, winning the state championship once and led his team to a third place state finish. He also graduated with high honors. He will wrestle at 141 lbs. for the Argos.

Garret Blydenburg

Blydenburgh joins the program from Palmer, Alaska, where he wrestled for Mat-Su Career and Tech High School. He finished third at state twice. He will wrestle at 157 lbs. for the Argos.

Lane Breuer
Breuer HS

Breuer joins the program from Great Falls, where he wrestled and played football for Great Falls High School. He will wrestle at 174 lbs. for the Argos.

Adam Cearley
Cearley HS

Cearley joins the program from Stockton, California, where he wrestled, ran track and field and played football at Lincoln High School. Also a member of the Argo track and field team, Cearley will wrestle at both 197 lbs. and 285 lbs. for the Argos.

Ethan DeRoche
DeRoche

DeRoche joins the program from Great Falls, where he wrestled and played football at Great Falls High School. He was a three-time state champion in high school and was named All-State twice. He was a part of the Great Falls High School wrestling state championship in 2020. He also was named All-Conference twice as a defensive lineman. He will wrestle at 285 lbs. for the Argos.

Forrest Fairbanks
Fairbanks

Fairbanks joins the program after transferring from Montana State. He's initially from Manhattan High School in Manhattan, Montana where he wrestled and played football. He finished second in state and was a two-time divisional champion. He led his team in takedowns, pins and had the quickest pin.  He will wrestle at 157 lbs. for the Argos.

Philip Gerard
Gerard

Gerard joins the program from Henderson, Nevada, where he wrestled for Rio Rancho High School. He went 103-35 during his high school career, including an individual regional championship and a regional runner-up finish. He was also named his team's Most Valuable Wrestler. He will wrestle at 125 lbs. for the Argos.

Jordan Hilford
Hillford

Hilford joins the program from Clovis, California where he wrestled and played football at Clovis High School. He finished 3rd at both the CIF Divisionals and CIF Masters. He finished 6th place at the Fargo Nationals Greco. He won the Western Regional Freestyle and finished as a runner-up in the Western Regional Greco. He will wrestle at 197 lbs. for the Argos.

Raf LeaPaga
LeaPaga

LeaPaga joins the program from Kapolei, Hawaii where he played football, judo and wrestled at Kapolei High School. He won a judo state championship, and placed twice in state as a wrestler. He won the OIA Championship twice as well. He led his team to a runner-up finish at state. He will wrestle at 285 lbs. for the Argos.

Andrew Macias
Macias

Macias joins the program from Sunnyside, Washington where he wrestled and ran cross country for Sunnyside High School. He finished in the Top 5 at state three years in a row, including two runner-up finishes. He was named the Wrestler of the Year as a junior. He will wrestle at 141 lbs. for the Argos.

Dante Reviglio
Reviglio

Reviglio joins the program from Yerington, Nevada where he wrestled and played football for Yerington High School. He was a three-time state champion as a wrestler and led his team to a runner-up finish at state. He also led his team to a football state championship. He is a member of the National Honor Society. He will wrestle at 149 lbs. for the Argos.

Brennyn Running Crane
Running Crane

Running Crane joins the program from Browning, Mont. where he wrestled and played football for Browning High School. He was also a member of student government and qualified for the Honor Roll. He will wrestle at 174 lbs. for the Argos.

Liam Swanson
Swanson Graphic

Swanson joins the program from Great Falls, Mont., where he wrestled and played football for Great Falls High School. He will wrestle at 184 lbs. and 197 lbs. for the Argos.

Cylar Taylor
Taylor

Taylor joins the program from White Sulphur Springs, Mont. where he wrestled and played football for White Sulphur Springs High School. He finished third in state as a wrestler. He was named All-State in football and led his team to a state runner-up finish. He was also named to the Honor Roll. He will wrestle at 174 lbs. for the Argos.

Elijah Warner

Warner joins the program from Frenchtown, Montana where he wrestled and golfed for Frenchtown High School. He placed in the top four in state all four years, including two runner-up finishes as an upperclassmen. He was named both All-State and All-Conference. He led team to two division championships. He also graduated with high honors. He will wrestle at 125 lbs. for the Argos.

Caleb Werner

Werner joins the program from Umpqua Community College, where he was a two-time NJCAA National Qualfiier. Werner, who was team captain for the RiverHawks, was also an Academic All-American. He is originally from Tillamook High School in Tillamook, Oregon, where he wrestled and played football. He was a four-time conference champion in high school and was named All-State three times. He won an individual state championship and finished sixth place twice. He finished fourth place at the Western States Freestyle and fifth at the Western States Greco. He was also named All-Conference as a linebacker. He was named to the Honor Roll, President's List and was a four-time All-Conference Scholar Athlete.
