Argos Topple Lions on Senior Day

GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence men's soccer team got back on track on Friday, defeating Multnomah 5-0 during Senior Day.

Gudmundur Gudmundsson got things rolling for the Argos (3-8-1, 3-6-1) in the 10th minute, scoring a goal an assist from George Almeida. Kolby Hayes scored the second goal of the day after putting in the rebound off the shot from Mika Lukas Lankhof in the 32nd minute. Almeida pushed the lead to three at halftime with a goal of his own in the 42nd minute off an assist from Kevin Vasquez-Hernandez.

The Argos continued the scoring in the second half, when Tomeu Nebot Schmalfeld found the back off the net off the assist from Jack Rimstad in the 50th minute. Jesus Arellano scored the fifth and final goal in the 81st minute off a penalty kick, recording the first goal of his career.

"We played with some real confidence today," interim head coach Michael Rahn said. "We had a lot of moments where we were together, with everyone supporting everyone. It was a great game."

The Argos outshot the Lions (2-11-1, 2-7-1) 18 to six on the day. Hayes led the team with four shots, including three on target, followed by Arellano, who had three.

The day also doubled as Senior Day for the program's eight seniors who will graduate from the program. Almeida, Arellano, Vasquez-Hernandez, Gudmundur Gudmundsson, Daniel Huseby, Cole Koenig, Evan Scholes and Matthew Wilkinson were all honored before the game in a special presentation.

"What a pleasure it was to recognize eight outstanding student-athletes that have really raised the caliber of our program both academically and athletically," Rahn said. "They are exceptional student-athletes. I couldn't be more proud of their excellence and achievements. There is so much more for us this season. We're going to do everything we can to help them achieve their goals."

The Argos will play their final game of the season on Saturday against Warner Pacific. The game will begin at 1:00 p.m.
