GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence women's soccer team lost a heartbreaker on Saturday, falling in double-overtime to Warner Pacific 1-0.
After an evenly-matched 90 minutes, the two teams headed to overtime. The Argos dominated the field of play during the first period of overtime, but couldn't find the back of the net. The Knights took advantage, scoring the game-winning goal in the first minute of the second overtime period, when Kaitlin Hirasa scored off the assist from Sophia Painter.
"It was a great matchup," head coach
Heather Blandford said. "It was two evenly-matched teams that desperately wanted to come in here and put their best foot forward. It was a hard-fought 90 plus minutes and unfortunately we came out on the wrong end of it today. I don't take away anything from the effort, the desire and the heart that they had out there."
The Knights outshot the Argos 13-10, though the Argos had more corners, 4-1.
Brittany Burman and
Dani Chang led the Argos in shots with three.
Justine Humphry started in the net for Argos, recording five saves.
The day also doubled as Senior Day for the Argos, as the team honored the five seniors from the program:
Jenna Evertz,
Emma Goodwin,
Shawnae Inama,
Kylee Manning and
Libby Martineau.
"This senior class is phenomenal," Blandford said. "Soccer is one thing, but these are amazing people. They're going to go out now and represent our institution and our program in such a bigger way. I'm so thankful that I got to be a part of that and that they chose us. Our goal is now is to make them proud of us in the future because I'll know they make us proud."
The Argos will conclude their season on Friday with a road matchup against Carroll. The game will begin at 3:30 p.m.
