DES MOINES, Iowa – Three University of Providence men's wrestlers placed in the Grand View Open, one of the most difficult tournaments the team will partake in all season. KC Buday finished as the runner-up in the 285 lb. weight class, Alan Badley finished fourth in the 184 lb. weight class and Jordan Komac finished 6th in the 165 lb. weight class.

"Those guys wrestled extremely well," head coach Steve Komac said. "We came to a very high-level tournament and had a lot of kids do well. It's a great sign for this team."

Buday, who entered the tournament ranked 13th in his weight class, started out strong in the heavyweight division, pinning his first opponent on the day. He won his next three matches to advance to the final, where he via a 5-2 decision to Greg Hagan, the top-ranked heavyweight wrestler in the nation.

"KC making the final at a very big tournament just shows what kind of ability he has," Komac said. "He's really a freakish athlete and he's just getting better and better all the time. He really believes in himself. Today is a sign of what he's capable of doing. He had a great day."

Badley had a breakout tournament in the 184 lb. weight class. Badley won his first match of the day before falling via decision to Sam Osho (Marian). Badley won his next two matches to get into the conference semifinals, where he pinned last year's NAIA National Champion Eric Vermillion (Indiana Tech). He faced Osho again in the third-place match, losing via major decision 11-2.

"The kids in our room are always impressed with Alan but the results just haven't been there so far this season," Komac said. "Today was one of those days where he put together an entire day of really good wrestling. He looked really good all day today. He pinned a returning National Champion. That definitely shows you what he's capable of."

Komac, who is currently ranked 7th nationally in the 165 lb. weight class, also showcased a strong showing for the Argos. Komac cruised in his opening match, before falling to Jordan Shoop (Grandview). He battled all the way back through the consolation bracket, winning three straight matches to earn a rematch with Shoop, who he defeated by a 4-1 decision. Komac was in position to wrestle for third place, but unfortunately could not compete any more as he had reached the tournament's match limit.

"Jordan could have tied for third place but we had a six-match limit, so he defaulted to sixth," Komac said. "He rebounded from an early loss and ended up beating that same kid, knocking him out of the tournament. That was a great way to see him respond as well from an early setback."

The coaching staff was also impressed with some of the younger wrestlers who competed in the freshman and sophomore division. Bridger Hall placed 4th in the 174 lb. weight class while Raf Leapaga placed 5th in the heavyweight division.

"We found a bunch of wins from our younger kids," Komac said. "That's a real upside for us moving forward."

The team will have a week before their next competition – they'll compete at the Spokane Invite on Sunday Nov. 21.
