GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The University of Providence women's wrestling team had a solid start to their season on Saturday at the Maverick Open in Grand Junction, Colo.

Ashley Gooman won the 116 lb. weight class, while Lana Hunt finished second in the 109 lb. weight class. Ira Navarro and Ivy Navarro both reached the final in the 101 lb. weight class and decided to double-forfeit in the championship.

"Overall we did really well," head coach Matt Atwood said. "I was very pleased. We were extremely dominant throughout the tournament. There towards the end, we lost some close matches that I don't think we should lose. Overall though we had a of good things happen today so I'm pretty happy with our first tournament."

Gooman was a standout for the squad, winning the 116 lb. weight class handily. She pinned her first opponent, NCAA Division II wrestler Anja Tschohl, before winning her next three matches via tech falls to win the weight classes.

The Navarro sisters  also stood out, with both cruising through their competition at the 101 lb. weight class. They each won their two matches pretty easily, with both notching a pin, to meet in the championship, where they double-forfeited to each other.

"Those three dominated their weight class in the tournament," Atwood said. "They didn't have a close match at all."

Lana Hunt also had a solid start to the season in the 109 lb. division. She pinned her first opponent and won via technical fall in the semifinals to advance to the championship. She lost in the championship to Asia Ray (Wayland Baptist), last season's defending NAIA National Champion.

Sabrina Perez (191 lbs.) and Paige Respicio (130 lbs.) both finished third in their respective weight classes, while Skylar Connelly (123 lbs.) finished fourth. Sadie Antoque (170 lbs.) Brooke Cicierski (136 lbs.), Sophia Dulin (155 lbs.) Kaelyn Siason (130 lbs.) and Alexis Tuopola (191 lbs.) all finished sixth.

The coaching staff was pleased with the results from the team, especially considering that it was the team's first tournament on the season. Atwood and assistant coach Yurie Yoneoka will spend the earlyh part of next week watching film with the wrestlers one on one to better prepare themselves for the Missouri Valley Open next week.

"As a whole, there's just some small things that we haven't had a chance to cover yet," Atwood said. "There's a lot of little things that if we had fixed it would have helped us win some of those close matches. It'll be good for the girls to watch themselves on film and see themselves making those mistakes and it'll help them make corrections."

The Missouri Valley Open will begin next Friday at 8:00 a.m. MTN.
