MARSHALL, Mo. –
Ivy Navarro finished as the runner-up in the 101 lb. division at the Missouri Valley Invite, one of the most difficult tournaments the team will compete in all season, on Saturday.
Navarro pinned Taylor Wilson (Indiana Tech) in the semifinals to advance to the finals. She lost to Olivia Shore (Tiffin), an NCAA Division II opponent, by a 4-2 margin in the championship round.
"Ivy had a phenomenal day," head coach
Matt Atwood said. "She ran into a very tough girl from Tiffin. Ivy got the first takedown and handled her for most of the match. We gave up a couple points at the end that I think we could have avoided. We have some small mistakes that we'll continue to work on and fix."
As a team, the Argos finished 11
th in the team division, scoring 72 points. They just missed out in the Top 10, finishing 1.5 points behind Campbellsville, the returning NAIA National Champions. King University, a NCAA Division II school, won the tournament with 244 points.
"There was a lot of teams bunched up around us," Atwood said. "Had we won one more match we move from 11
th to 8
th place. All the best teams from the country were here. A lot of coaches say this but a couple things go our way and we're in a different spot. I'm happy with where we're at. We now know specifically what we need to work on moving forward."
Paige Respecio finished 6
th in the 136 lbs. weight class, earning 12 points for the Argos.
Ashley Gooman finished 7
th in the 116 lbs. division, scoring 16 points for the squad.
Lexi Tupuola finished 8
th in the 191 lbs. weight class, earning 10.5 points.
"All four of these girls had All-American performances this weekend," head coach
Matt Atwood. "I'm pretty happy with the weekend."
The tournament also gave the team some experience of the level of conditioning required for a two-day event.
"It was the first two-day tournament of the year," Atwood said. "The girls got to see it and now they know what to expect for the future. They just have to continue to trust the process."
The team will have a week off for Thanksgiving break before returning to the mat on Dec. 3 for the Battle of the Rockies in the McLaughlin Center.
