SPOKANE, Wash. – The University of Providence men's wrestling team finished third overall as a team at the Spokane Open on Sunday.
The Argos finished with 137 points, just a point and a half behind 2
nd place MSU-Northern. Clackamas Community College won the open with a team score of 175. Six Argos placed during the event, which featured 11 different programs and a handful of unattached wrestlers.
"I think we had a good day overall," head coach
Steve Komac said. "We're seeing more and more kids up and down the lineup competing. That's a good progression for the team right now."
Joel Avila (125 lbs.) and
KC Buday (285 lbs.) were the headliners for the squad, with both finishing in second place in their respective weight classes. The duo was dominant throughout the tournament - Buday recorded three pins on the day while Avila won two of his matches by major decision.
"They're getting better all the time," Komac said. "They're staying consistent. It's one thing to have a good result one time, but they're getting consistent results for us."
Those two weren't the only ones who placed for the squad.
Alan Badley (184 lbs.) finished fourth, while
Deven Altenburg-Lasher (125 lbs.),
Caleb Birdwell (141 lbs.) and
Jordan Komac all finished sixth in their respective weight classes.
"We lost a handful of matches today that were nailbiters and some overtime matches," Komac said. "They were very winnable. The fact that we're in them is a good sign but we definitely can improve some things so that we can pull out a win in some of those tight ones."
The team will return to action following the Thanksgiving break with the Battle of the Rockies on Dec. 4 in the McLaughlin Center.
"We're very much trending in the right direction," Komac said. "You can see the right attitude throughout the team right now. It's exciting to see."
