GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence men's wrestling team has been spending the past two days preparing for a dual against their conference rival. The Argos (1-1) will take on Montana State-Northern Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. in Havre, Mont.
The Argos are coming off their
opening weekend in Powell, Wyo., where the team defeated Northwest before falling to Western Wyoming, the third-ranked team in the nation among junior colleges. Despite the Mustang's high ranking, the coaching staff believed the team didn't perform up to their normal level of play.
"We felt like we had a team that was more aggressive than us and a team that came at us, and we weren't ready to respond," head coach
Steve Komac said. "We have to be ready when someone comes after you and withstanding that storm that comes right away so that we're in the match towards the end. We just have to do a better job of that. We'll keep addressing that until we get that cleaned up."
Things won't get easier against the stout Lights squad (1-1). The two rivals have a common opponent against Northwest, with both teams cruising past the Trappers. The Argos defeated the Trappers 50-3, while the Lights beat them 25-0.
"We know Northern is always tough," Komac said. "Their coaching staff does an outstanding job at that program that goes way back for years. We know it's going to be a highly-contested contest. Our focus has been to improve on our own performance and improving on what we saw last weekend. If we do that we'll do well tomorrow night."
So far this week the coaching staff has been happy with the response of the team so far this week, and has no doubt of the team's desire to top their rival.
"There's a good amount of respect between the programs," Komac said. "It's going to be fun. They want to win, we want to win. They'll have a good crowd. It'll be a good environment and a fun event no matter what."
