Career Night From Stephens Leads Argos Past Redhawks

CHANDLER, Ariz. – Marcus Stephens recorded a career-high 38 points, and came up with a clutch defensive play, to lead the University of Providence men's basketball team passed Benedictine-Mesa 90-88 Saturday night in the team's second game of the Cactus Classic.

Up 89-88 with 11 seconds left, Stephens was fouled and sent to the foul line. He made the first free throw but missed the second, allowing the Redhawks (2-7, 0-0) a chance to either tie or take the lead at the buzzer. Stephens forced the turnover from Jay Small, sealing the win for the squad.

"We found a way to win," head coach Steve Keller said. "We didn't get very many stops but we got a big stop right there at the end. We haven't played very well down here but I'm really happy for our guys. We struggled again but we found a way."

Stephens finished the game shooting 16 of 29 (55.2%) from the floor and 5 of 10 (50%) from beyond the arc. He finished with six rebounds, three assists and two steals to go with his 38 points.

"Marcus was unbelievable," Keller said. "That's the best game he's ever played. He took a lot of shots but there wasn't many bad ones. Those are shots he's consistently making and we needed every single one of them today."

Rashee Stocks also came up big for the Argos, recording a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds, and also hit four three-pointers over the course of the game. Jake Olsen finished with 10 points and five boards.

The Argos (8-4, 1-1) will play their final game of the road trip tomorrow with a 2:00 p.m. bout against Embry-Riddle.

"We need to get some rest," Keller said. "We have to work on our defense and get better there tomorrow to finish this trip right."
