GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence men's wrestling team will kick off one of their biggest events of the year when they host the Battle of the Rockies this weekend.
The weekend will begin with dual action beginning at 3:00 p.m. on Friday. The wrestling will pick up again Saturday morning with a tournament beginning at 9:00 a.m.
"It's fun to bring teams into wrestle us here at home," head coach
Steve Komac said. "We get to sleep in our own beds, wrestle in front of our own fans and our own support system. We're really excited to be here."
The weekend will start at 2:00 p.m. with a series of duals. The Argos will first take on Southern Oregon in a conference bout, immediately followed by a dual against Dickinson State in a non-conference matchup. They'll conclude the day with a dual against Eastern Oregon.
The coaching staff is excited to start the weekend with dual competition, as they view it as an area to improve on.
"There's such a thing as being a better tournament team or a better dual team," Komac said. "We've been much happier with our tournament performances than we have with our dual performances. We definitely have stumbled in some duals where we realized a couple of our weights haven't had as much success. I'm excited that we get three duals this weekend because we need a better all-around team effort. Duals put a lot of focus on that. The dual format is good for us even though it's not easy on us right now."
The team will conclude the weekend on Saturday with the tournament, where a total of nine teams will bring their wrestlers to compete for the Battle of the Rockies throne. The coaching staff has picked out a few wrestlers on their team who they have challenged to win the tournament.
"We have kids that are capable of winning the tournament," Komac said. "However even some of our best kids, I wouldn't say they're favored to win the tournament because we do have some quality kids coming this weekend. We're going to see a lot of top competitors this weekend. A lot of important matches are going to happen over the next two days."
