GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The #24 University of Providence women's volleyball team survived a late push by Montana Tech Saturday afternoon, defeating the Orediggers 25-22, 25-23, 19-25, 22-25, 15-13.
The win marks the first time the Argos (4-2, 4-2) have won on the second night of a double-header so far this season. The squad is undefeated on the season so far during the first game.
"They're well-coached," head coach
Arunas Duda said. "They got some great kids on their team. You can't say enough about them as an opponent. There's a reason they were in the
Conference Tournament finals with us last year and
picked to win it again this year. That's a great win for us."
The Argos played their best volleyball of the season during the first two sets, but midway through the third set the momentum began to shift. The Argos fell to the Orediggers 19-25 in the third, and again 22-25 in the fourth set. After a back and forth fifth set, the two teams found themselves at 13-13.
Sadie Lott got a kill to give the Argos a one-point lead before a block by Lott and
Isaura Santos secured the victory.
"We just got to figure out a few things on where that letdown is happening," Duda said. "We have such a significant turnaround. We have all the momentum going and then in set three we let our guard down a little bit. We'll watch film and make sure we switch that around."
Two-time Frontier Conference Setter of the Week Cydney Finberg-Roberts had her usual spectacular performance, tying her season-high with 57 assists. Lott and
Adysen Burns both stepped up all over the court, with Lott recording 21 kills and 25 digs and Burns getting 16 kills and 19 digs.
Sacha Legros led the Argos defensively with 32 digs.
Karina Mickelson led the Orediggers (2-4, 2-4) offensively with 22 kills. McKenna Kaelber recorded 41 assists, while Hannah Ogerinno recorded 29 digs.
The Argos will take on Montana-State Northern next weekend.
