GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence men's basketball team will begin postseason play this Saturday at 7 p.m. with a Frontier Conference Playoffs semifinal game against Montana State-Northern.
The Argos (15-2)
clinched the regular season title outright and earned a
first-round bye by being the top seed. The Lights (8-11, 6-11) defeated Montana Western 67-54 Thursday night in the opening round of the Frontier Conference Playoffs.
"They're going to be a tough opponent," head coach
Steve Keller said. "They're probably the best defensive team in the conference. They're very patient on offense. It's going to be a tough game for us. They're good."
The Lights gave the Argos their only home loss of the season,
defeating the Argos 96-85 on Jan. 30. The Argos got revenge the following night,
defeating the Lights 78-66 with star
Zaccheus Darko-Kelly returning to the lineup. The Argos also defeated the Lights 80-66 on Feb. 10.
The Argos have spent the week letting their bodies recover from the grueling February schedule. Before this 6-day break between games, the Argos had played a total of 11 games in the last 24 days.
"We've really rested this week," Keller said. "We've tried to clean up some things on both sides on the ball. We're not used to practicing this much because we haven't had time like this in the last month. We've been fine-tuning a few things."
The squad has had success in the McLaughlin Center carving out a 9-1 home record so far this season. Should the Argos win on Saturday, they would host the Frontier Conference Championship Game on Tuesday.
"We've played well at home for most of the season," Keller said. "We're pretty comfortable here. We sleep in our own beds. Hopefully we can protect our home court."
The Argos and Lights will tip off at 7 p.m. on Saturday in the McLaughlin Center. The Frontier Conference has continued their
no-spectator policy through the entirety of the Frontier Conference Playoffs, so no fans will be permitted to the game. Fans can watch online for free on the
University of Providence Argos YouTube channel.
