GREAT FALLS, Mont. – In a match similar to last year's regular season finale, the #24 University of Providence volleyball team took down #18 Rocky Mountain in five sets, 24-26, 25-23, 25-23, 14-25, 15-10.
The two ranked Frontier foes battled all night with several long rallies. The first three sets were all decided by two points, before the Battlin' Bears ran away with the fourth set 25-14 to tie it up at two sets apiece.
In the fifth set the teams traded points until the Bears took a 7-5 lead. The Argos responded, tying it up at 8-8, before scoring four straight points, two of which came from
Bailey Christensen. Christensen recorded a third kill to help the Argos control the remainder of the match, winning 15-10.
"We knew this game was going to be some great defense and some long rallies," head coach
Arunas Duda said. "We talked about it all week. I'm just really proud of these girls the way they battled through it all."
Frontier Conference Setter of the Week Cydney Finberg-Roberts moved the ball had 57 assists on the night. Freshman
Sadie Lott led the attack, recording 20 kills on the night.
Jensyn Turner added 14 while Christensen notched 13.
Isaura Santos had nine kills, including the game-winning kill.
Sacha Legros led the way defensively, recording 49 digs on the evening. Lott was also active defensively, recording 20 kills while
Taylor Christensen added 24. Finberg-Roberts notched 18 kills while
Adysen Burns had 17.
"Sacha was all over the place tonight," Duda said. "She touched everything. What a great performance from Sadie. I thought we moved the ball pretty well tonight. Just an overall great effort. You talk about learning from week to week and I thought we did exactly that."
Though it was a big win for the young team, the Argos will have to quickly put it in the rearview mirror. The two teams will duke it out again Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
"We'll talk about a gameplan in the morning," Duda said. "We definitely got some things that we need to fix and adjust to. Our hititing percentage wasn't great tonight. A lot of that is credit to Rocky's block. They did a nice job slowing us down. There's definitely some adjustments that we have to make."
