LA GRANDE, Ore. – The University of Providence men's soccer team remained undefeated by defeating Eastern Oregon 2-1 Sunday afternoon.
Manu Garcia got things going for the Argos (3-0, 3-0) with a goal in the 15
th minute. The Mountaineers (1-7, 0-5) responded a little over ten minutes later with a goal from Patrick Larsen.
Things remained tied at halftime, but
George Almeida found the back of the net six minutes into the second half to give the Argos a lead. The Mountaineers had several opportunities in the second half, but stout defensive effort from the Argos secured the victory.
"The guys really worked hard for this one," interim head coach
Danny Burstein said. "The results from that is really big. We'll just keep going and take each day as it comes and each game on its own. We're going to keep putting in the work."
The Mountaineers took a total of 16 shot, six of which were on goal. The Argos took five total, three of which were on target.
Evan Scholes recorded five saves in the net.
"So many guys put in such great efforts today," Burstein said. "It really required the whole team to leave it out on the field. Everyone from our forwards up top, to our midfielders, to our back line really put in a good effort and played great and just didn't let up. Everybody did what they needed to do and worked together to make it a victory."
The two teams will face off again tomorrow at 2:30 MTN.
"We had a lot of guys play 90 minutes and have to push through," Burstein said. "The guys really showed up and answered the bell today. Tomorrow will be a lot how our guys manage tired legs."
