Cielak, Jones Win First Tournament of the Season

GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence golf team produced the top golfer in both the men's and women's dual against Montana State-Northern on Thursday. Jonny Cielak held the top spot on the men's side while Kielar Jones secured a win on the women's side.

All three Argo men's golfers finished in the top three. Ceilak finished first with an 80, Ben Kaul finished second with an 85, and Colton Stodghill finished third with a 93. Stodghill beat out TJ Reynolds by one stroke to secure the third spot.

Jones finished with a 94, six strokes ahead of Megan Vandenacre to secure the top spot on the women's side. Kate Murack scored one stroke behind Vandenacre at 101 for a third place finish. Karlee Permann tied for fourth with Tiara Gilham at 105. M'Kenzie Whiteman finished in seventh place with a score of 108.

"Our players really stood out today," head coach Spencer Williams said. "I expected them to do very well, but they exceeded my expectations and really separated themselves from the rest of the pack. I'm proud of them."

The golfers had to deal with strong wind throughout the entire day, which greatly impacted everyone's final scorecard. However Williams saw a lot of strong play from his team, and found areas of improvement for each individual golfer to improve on.

"We finally have a nice day where it's above 50 degrees and the wind starts blowing," he said. "Hopefully as we move forward, they forget about the wind and the scoring part of it. I want them to focus on parts of the game that they need to improve on as we prepare for the conference tournament."

The event marks the first time the team has competed in 548 days. The competition gives the team a little bit of collegiate experience before the Frontier Conference Tournament, which will begin April 18 in Boise, Idaho.

"I'm just thrilled to be out competing again," Williams said. "It's just good for us to play something. We needed a little bit of tournament experience, especially for our freshman who have never played in a college event before. It's all positive from here on out. We just expect to improve all the way up until conference."
