EAGLE, Idaho – The University of Providence golf team completed the second round of the Frontier Conference Golf Championship on Tuesday.
The women improved on their score from their opening day, decreasing their team score by 22 strokes and finishing fourth of the five teams on the day. They are still in 5
th place with a score of 868, trailing Montana State-Northern by 34 strokes.
"They had good positive attitudes going into today," head coach
Spencer Williams said. "We worked on some putting stuff and some short game stuff after playing yesterday. I think they took that to the golf course today. Three of our girls are freshman. The jitters of playing in their first big college tournament is wearing off. They look a little bit more comfortable out there."
Kielar Jones, who started the day in 14
th place after the first round, shot up two spots up to 12
th place. She is three stokes behind the 9
th place, and will look to crack the top 10 tomorrow.
"It's all about her short-game and making some putts," Williams said. "If she can do that tomorrow then she'll be in the Top 10."
On the men's side,
Jonny Cielak remains the highest placed Argo golfer as he's currently in a three-way tie for eighth place. After shooting an 81 yesterday, he improved by three strokes for a total of 159. He is currently eight strokes behind the leader, and four strokes behind cracking the Top 5.
"He needs to make some putts," Williams said. "He's struggling a little bit with the putter, but we spent a good hour and half working on putting after the round today. Hopefully that pays off for him tomorrow."
Ben Kaul moved up two spots to the 11 spot, improving by a total of seven strokes today with a score of 80. He is eight strokes behind the three tied at 159 and will do what he can to break into the Top 10 tomorrow in the final round.
Colton Stodghill was right behind Kaul at 13th place with a 174.
"Ben was more consistent off the tee box today," Williams said. "We worked before he teed off today on playing a consistent shot. I think he's starting to trust his swing a little bit more."
The final round of the championship will begin at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow.
