Argos Fall to Mountaineers in Lone Saturday Game

GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence softball team lost their sole Saturday game to Eastern Oregon 23-4.

The Mountaineers got things rolling immediately, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Argos responded in the top of the third, putting one run on the board when McKenzie Staats brought Taylor Mathews home on an RBI single. But the Mountaineers responded as well, scoring eight runs in a big third inning swing.

Down 11-1 entering the top of the fourth inning, Taylor Mathews cut into the deficit with an RBI double, scoring Sam Hernandez and Sarah Bury. But they couldn't contain the Mountaineers offense, allowing 12 more runs in the bottom of the fourth.  Bury brought Staats home in the top of the fifth, but it wasn't enough to make the comeback.

"We just couldn't stop their offense today," head coach Joey Egan said. "They had a total of 19 hits. You don't win a lot of games giving up 19 hits."

The Argos recorded seven hits on the day and made no errors in the field. They'll return to Argo Field next week for a home series against Carroll College. The first game will begin at 2 p.m. on April 29.
