BILLINGS, Mont. – The University of Providence men's soccer team lost in heartbreaking fashion Tuesday, when Rocky Mountain scored a game-winning goal in double-overtime to take a 3-2 victory.
"With 90 seconds left in the game, to lose like that is the tough part," interim head coach
Danny Burstein said. "I didn't want the game to end that way."
The Argos (3-2-2) got on the board first with a goal by
George Almeida with 15 minutes left in the first half. Up 1-0 at half, Almeida scored again in the 55
th minute. The Battlin' Bears (8-0) responded with a goal from Ethan Boone 12 minutes later. Boone found the back of the net five minutes later to even the score.
Both teams had plenty of opportunities in overtime, but it was Boone's third goal, off the assist from Milo Downey, that ended the game.
"It was the best we played all year," Burstein said. "It was as close to a complete game as possible. We were all over the place. It was very different compared to yesterday. We had a high energy-level, worked hard all over the field. Because of that things happened for us in a positive way."
The two teams were fairly matched – the Argos took a total of 12 shots, seven of which were on target, while the Battlin' Bears took 14 shots, eight on goal.
The games marks the end of the season for the Argos. The team battled through a ton of adversity all season, from hiring a new coach in the offseason, not getting to practice during the fall, and playing abrupted 10-game schedule full of back to back games.
"The guys fought hard," Burstein said. "They never counted themselves out. We showed up and played every game the best we could."
