OLYMPIA, Wash. – The University of Providence women's soccer team picked up their first win of the season Saturday afternoon, defeating Evergreen State 1-0 in Olympia, Wash.
Megan Haugen scored the deciding goal for the Argos (1-5, 1-2) in the 49
th minute, scoring a long ball from midfield to give the team the deciding goal.
"Megan was out deep in the midfield and was able to put the ball in," head coach
Heather Blandford said. "She was able to just nail it in the back post."
The win comes a day after a
heartbreaking loss to Northwest, on which the team gave up two goals in the final five minutes. Blandford was proud of how the team responded and refocused from the loss and committed to the team's game plan.
"The way we got the result is what's most fun," she said. "We were willing to put in the work. We were willing to put in the effort. We battled for everything together. We were able to not only get the goal but the shutout today. Both of those are huge strides for us."
The Geoducks (0-6-1, 0-4) outshot the Argos 12 to nine in a gritty, physical game. Haugen,
Kylee Manning and
Julia Tilton both led the team with two shots for the Argos, with each one putting one on target.
Justine Humphry played the entire game in the net for the squad, recording a total of five saves.
The Argos will look to build off the win with a pair of home games next week, when they take on Oregon Tech and Southern Oregon. Both games will start at 4:00 p.m. MTN at Argo Field.
"The next two weeks are going to be pretty tough," Blandford said. "We got four highly-ranked opponents coming at us. We want to build on what happened today. We want to build on those defensive concepts as a team, and have that confidence moving forward."
