WHITEFISH, Mont. – For the second time already this season, a pair of University of Providence players have been named the Erck Hotels Frontier Conference Players of the Week.
Cydney Finberg-Roberts was named the Frontier Conference Setter of the Week, while
Jenna Thorne was named the Frontier Conference Attacker of the Week. Both players were critical for the #10 Argos (7-1), who went 3-1 this past weekend, including a
win over #6 Concordia.
This is the 11
th time in Finberg-Roberts' career that she was won the Player of the Week award. The junior setter moved the ball extremely well, averaging an astounding 11.08 assists per set this past weekend. She was also active defensively, recording 2.17 digs per set. On the season, she is recording 11.15 assists per set, good for
fifth in the nation.
"She was great this weekend," head coach
Arunas Duda said. "In that match against Concordia she was so determined and ran the court really well. You can tell when she gets that look in her eye when you can tell she's just going to get it done, and she definitely had that on Saturday. It was well-deserving."
This is the first time in Thorne's career that she has been named the Frontier Conference Attacker of the Week. The sophomore-transfer from Karitane, New Zealand was a beast this past weekend, averaging 3.75 kills a set on a .297 hitting percentage, while leading the team in kills in three of the four matches.
"She's really turned it on as one of our go-to hitters," Duda said. "She is very terminal from the outside and week by week she keeps getting better and better. We're excited for what the future holds for her."
The awards mark a total of four Player of the Week awards for the Argos so far this season, after Finberg-Roberts and
Sadie Lott took home the awards
two weeks ago. Duda has been impressed with the way his team has performed, especially against the level of competition the team has played so far this year. The Argos have already beaten three Top 10 teams on the season.
"We've set the bar pretty high with the competition that we've played and we have kids stepping up in these big matches," Duda said. "I think our program is at the point now where everyone has high expectations for us, including ourselves, and we're not going to settle for anything less. The girls worked hard for these awards and I'm excited for them."
Things won't get any easier for the team, as the Argos will travel to Arizona this weekend for three games, including one against #12 Bellevue.
