MARSHALL, Mo. – Three wrestlers for the University of Providence men's wrestling program placed at the Missouri Valley Invite on Saturday.
KC Buday (285 lbs.) and
Hayden Schrull (184 lbs.) both placed seventh in their respective weight classes while
KJ Swanson (174 lbs.) finished eighth. As a team, the University of Providence finished in 13
th place with a total of 62.5 points.
"We had four wrestlers compete today," head coach
Steve Komac said. "Three of them made it into the middle matches. Three out of four isn't bad. We had a chance to win that fourth match and came up just a little short. Those guys competed really well. The matches we're losing are good contests. Nobody is blowing us out or beating us up. We're right in those matches that we're capable of winning."
The coaching staff was particularly pleased with the return of
Hayden Schrull, who returned to the lineup after missing all of last season with an injury.
"He's getting better every match," Komac said. "Prior to his injuries, we thought Hayden was one of our up and coming stars. We were really excited about him. He had a pretty significant setback with an injury and missed the entire season a year ago. It's taken him some time to get in a groove. He's getting better with every match. This weekend, for him to come down here and place, gets people talking about him again. He's on the right track."
The Invite is regarded among the wrestling community as one of the top tournaments of the season, and coaches around from the nation use it as point of reference ahead of the NAIA National Tournament. The Argos, who are receiving votes
in the latest NAIA National Poll, broke out to finish 13
th, but the team still believes they are capable of more.
"We want to try to break into the Top 10," Komac said. "13
th place isn't a bad showing for us but there's still room for plenty of improvement. We've been wrestling without
Jordan Komac for over a month now. We expect him to return in the next week or two to our lineup. Once we get full strength and healthy we expect to be pretty competitive."
The team will return to the mat next Saturday at the Tyler Plummer Classic in Dickinson, North Dakota.
