KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The University of Providence women's basketball team will look to add to their 11-game winning streak on Thursday, with a 5:00 p.m. home contest against Montana Tech.
The Argos (20-3, 7-1), who
received a #16 ranking by the NAIA earlier on Wednesday, will then travel to a Helena on Saturday for a Top 25 matchup against #7 Carroll College.
The squad has been hooping as of late, with their last loss coming on Dec. 2
to Rocky Mountain College. The team has won five games against ranked opponents during this winning streak, and the coaching staff credits the team's ability to adjust on the fly as a big reason why.
"The ability for us to be able to adjust has been huge for us," head coach
Bill Himmelberg said. "We follow the game plan but then if we don't like what's happening, we adjust and try something different. We've ran different stuff all four quarters some games. Our team is old enough to be able to do that and has enough experience to be able to execute different game plans. That's been the key for us."
The team will be prepared to make adjustments on Thursday against a tough Oredigger (11-12, 2-6) team. The last time
the two teams played, the Argos shot just 1-of-23 from beyond the arc, but used a furious 26-6 fourth quarter to come out on top.
"They're really good in the post," Himmelberg said. "Their guards are solid and can shoot it. They shoot a good three-point percentage. They provide some problems. It's going to be tough. Hopefully we'll defend their actions well because they run some nice stuff. We're going to have to keep them off the boards. And then hopefully we shoot it a bit better than we did last time."
On Saturday, the team will travel down to Helena to take on the #7 Fighting Saints (18-4, 6-2). The Saints are only a game behind the Argos
in the Frontier Conference standings, and will be looking for revenge after
losing to the squad in the McLaughlin Center two weeks ago.
"It's going to be a hostile environment so we're going to have to take care of the ball," Himmelberg said. "We can't turn the ball over. They're going to try to get up and pressure us the whole time and take our guards out of the game. We have to make sure we have a balanced scoring attack, both inside and out. That will be the key."
With the standings as close as they are at the top, every week is a big week for the team. However the coaching staff is confident in the team's ability to stay focused throughout the remainder of the conference season.
"Every week right now we play a top-ranked team," Himmelberg said. "You can't get any bigger games than that. Hopefully we can gain a little space from somebody if we can. We just have to try and win on Thursday. Every game will end up mattering so we can't worry about anything except for winning the game in front of us."
The game against the Orediggers, which will double as 80s night, will tip off at 5:00 p.m. in the McLaughlin Center.
