LOUISVILLE, Ky. –The #13 University of Providence showed tremendous poise against two of the top teams in the nation with a depleted lineup on Thursday at the National Duals in Louisville, Kent.
The Argos (0-3, 0-1) lost to #9 Baker 21-24 in the first match of the day before falling to #11 Indiana Tech 15-29 in the second match, eliminating the squad from the tournament.. In the first match, the Argos spotted 10 points via last-minute injury forfiets and had to spot 15 points to Indiana Tech in the second match.
"Were very injured and we still won a lot of matches against two very quality teams," head coach
Matt Atwood said. "Both of those teams secured their spot in the Top 8 and we battled them closely. Overall the girls wrestled really well. It's hard to win duals when you're giving the other team 15 points. We found some more adversity when we got here and the girls stepped up and dealt with it. They all stepped up and did everything they could to make up that difference. They got pretty close. I'm proud of them."
Ashley Gooman,
Ira Navarro,
Ivy Navarro and
Paige Respicio all went undefeated on the day.
Lana Hunt won her first match and was winning her second match before suffering an injury.
"Ira was really sharp," Atwood said. "She was pretty dominant today. Lana showed a ton of improvement before she injured her foot. I was really with pleased with her. Ashley looked real good. Paige was lights out; she was dominant today. I don't think she wrestled for more than 30 seconds today"
Though he's proud of the team's adversity, Atwood still knows there is plenty of work left to do to get this team prepared for the National Tournament.
"We've demonstrated three times now that we can compete with the top teams in the country," Atwood said. "The girls that are able to go, we're going to keep pushing. We're going to keep pushing that wall back, get in a little bit better shape and make sure we're ready to go moving forward. "
