Merida, Mexico – The University of Providence women fell in the final game of pool play at the 2022 FISU Americas Games Sunday in Merida, Mexico losing 70-48 to the host country. Reed Hazard led the way with eight points, McKenna Reggear added seven points, seven rebounds with Brooklyn Harn chipping in six points and 10 boards. The game counted as an exhibition for the Argo women and does not get applied to the overall record.
Head Coach Bill Himmelberg says it was a good chance to play the younger girls and get ready for the semifinals, "We wanted to rest our girls for the medal round, and we were able to do that. We executed our game plan at the beginning. It was an opportunity to play some kids that hadn't gotten a lot of playing time yet. Proud of our kids, we turned it over way too much, but we kind of expected that (with seven freshmen) but threw them into the fire."
Providence, which is representing Team USA at the games, will turn its attention to the medal round Monday with a rematch against Team Argentina. The Argos beat Argentina in the first game of the weekend, 50-41. There will be a watch party at the Halftime Sports Bar, or you can follow the action of the semifinal round at 2:30 PM MDT at www.upargos.com.
