GRIMES, Iowa – KC Buday finished second, Abel Nava took fourth, and Aden Graves finished fifth for the University of Providence men's wrestling team at the Grand View Open Saturday in Grimes, Iowa.
Buday, ranked 5th in the NAIA, defeated 3rd ranked Tommy Mommer of Grand View 3-1 in sudden victory in the semifinals at 285 before falling 5-2 to No. 2 Greg Hagen, also of Grand View, in the championship match. Buday won two matches in sudden victory, and also earned a tech fall (22-7) to keep his early season success going.
Nava lost to top ranked Isaiah Luellen of Grand View in the consolation championship at 174 by decision 6-2. Nava earned two major decisions, a tech fall, as well as a fall on the day in Iowa.
Graves wrestling at 157, reached his six match limit for the day or he might have been able to place higher according to Head Coach Steve Komac.
"Aden is a very talented young man that is incredibly savvy for a true freshman," says Komac. He also provides a lot of good leadership on and off the mat for our young guys and sets a great example of wrestling hard and doing things right.
"We had a pretty decent tournament overall and had some great performances from some guys. Regarding Abel, this is exactly what we know he is capable of. Tristan Bremer and Sawyer Hobbs came up one match short of placing but had some very notable wins. We will get back to practice for the week and work on things we saw and then compete in Spokane on the 20th."
