HONOLULU, Hawaii – The women from the University of Providence had a chance to tie it late, but a Kenedy Cartwright layup rolled off the rim and the Argos suffered a 50-47 loss to Menlo College (Calif.) Saturday at the Hoops in Hawaii Classic in Honolulu.
Cartwright finished with a double-double of 23 points and 10 rebounds as the Argos fell to 10-3 overall. Brooklyn Harn had eight points and 11 rebounds despite missing most of the first half with a mildly sprained ankle. Providence finished the game just 32.8% (20-61) from the field. That shooting percentage was low thanks in large part to the fact that the Argos did not make a three going 0-17.
"We had a lot of good looks, they just didn't seem to land," says Head Coach Bill Himmelberg. "Tough when you do that."
"I thought defensively we stellar. We held them to enough to be able to win. I am really proud of our kids."
Kiara Brown scored 21 points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead the Oaks, who were held to just 31% shooting, going 18-58. Vivian Woo added 15 points including a 3 of 6 effort from deep. Providence outrebounded the Oaks 44-42 and both teams struggled holding onto the ball with the Argos committing 21 turnovers while Menlo had 19. Menlo though outscored the Argos 19-4 in points off turnovers.
Providence struggled to get to Hawaii as the Argos were delayed out of Bozeman thanks to plane issues and played without McKenna Reggear and Reed Hazard who were both out of the lineup nursing mild injuries, neither are expected to miss much time.
The Argos continue their Hawaiian excursion with a game Sunday against the College of the Ozarks. Tipoff is set for 6:45 PM MST and can be livestreamed at www.upargos.com.
