GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The #19 University of Providence women's basketball will wrap up the regular season on Thursday with a massive Frontier Conference matchup.
The Argos (24-5, 11-3) will host #7 Carroll College at 5:00 p.m. in the McLaughlin Center. Both the Argos and the Fighting Saints (23-5, 11-3) are currently tied with Rocky Mountain College at the top
of the Frontier Conference standings. With the Battlin' Bears (23-4, 11-3) hosting Montana Western Thursday night, the regular season championship will come down to the outcome of the Thursday night matchups.
Should two teams tie for the best conference record after Thursday's games, the conference will name both teams regular season co-champions. Since one of either Providence or Carroll will win on Thursday, the winner of the match-up will win at least a share of the regular season conference championship.
"It's not surprising in the Frontier Conference as close as everything is," head coach
Bill Himmelberg said. "We say it all the time, but when you have three teams in the Top 20 that are all extremely close, it's not surprising it would come down to the last game of the year."
The Argos, however, are only worried about one game Thursday night. The squad has split the previous two games against the Saints, with each team winning on their home court.
"They're really good defensively and really good on the boards," Himmelberg said. "We're going to have to rebound - that's going to be the key for us. We can't let them get second, third or fourth shot attempts. They're going to execute with pace. We have to make sure that we make them defend for more than five seconds."
The game will feature a pair of dynamic duos. The Saints are led by the two-headed monster of Jamie Pickens and Danielle Wagner. Pickens is averaging 12.9 points and 6.4 rebounds a game while Wagner is averaging 14.6 points and 4.3 boards a game.
The Argos are led by
Parker Esary and
Emilee Maldonado, who both eclipsed the 2,000 point career mark during the season. Maldonado is averaging 17.4 points, 4.6 assists and 4.5 rebounds a game while Esary is averaging 15.1 points and 7.9 rebounds a game. Esary has recorded a double-double in the past four games.
"We want to execute offensively," Himmelberg said. "We want to stick with the things that we normally do. We're just focusing on the fundamentals of executing and making baskets."
Prior to the tip-off, the team will honor the six seniors on the team in a special senior presentation.
Cameron Cady,
Reed Hazard,
Kerstyn Pimperton and
Elly Teske will join Esary and Maldonado in the ceremony.
"They're a special group," Himmelberg said. "I love all of them. If we make the National Tournament this year, which we probably will, it'll be five straight years at the National Tournament. That's pretty special in itself. They're a winning group that created a winning culture both on and off the court. They're a fun group to be around."
