Joel Avila (133 lbs.),
Caleb Birdwell (141 lbs.),
Jordan Komac (165 lbs.),
Alan Badley (184 lbs.),
Hayden Schrull (184 lbs.) and
KC Buday all qualified for the semifinals. Of the 12 wrestlers that the Argos brought to the tournament, 11 will compete in the second day of the tournament.
"As a team we competed very well today," head coach
Steve Komac said. "We won a lot of very good matches. We beat some higher seeds than us in some brackets. Overall we had a pretty good day. We wrestled pretty well up and down the lineup."
The Argos are currently in fifth place as a team with 51 points. MSU-Northern is leading the pack with 69 points, followed by Eastern Oregon with 64.5. Menlo is third with 62.5 points while Embry-Riddle is fourth at 60.5. There are 12 teams competing in the conference tournament.
"We're not super concerned with the team score after the first day," Komac said. "We just won a lot of tight matches, where a lot of teams got some bonus points with some pins and things like that. That's what's separating us right now as far as the team score goes. As far as the win-loss column goes today there was a lot more good than bad."
The tournament will pick up again Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. Championship matches will begin at 5:00 p.m.
"Tomorrow is a big day for us," Komac said. "I'm excited to go out and compete."
