WHITEFISH, Mont. – University of Providence women's basketball player
Parker Esary was named the Erck Hotels Frontier Conference Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.
"I'm excited for her," Himmelberg said. "It's definitely well-deserved. She did everything she could do to give us a chance to get a victory, and we got it done."
Esary had a career night on Thursday
in the 93-92 double-overtime win against #7 Carroll College, which granted the Argos (25-5, 12-3) a share of their first regular season championship since the 1980-81 season. On her senior night, Esary poured in a career-high 39 points on 13-of-15 shooting from the field and 13-of-16 from the charity stripe, including a pair of game-winning free throws with one second left. She also broke the all-time program rebounding record in the second quarter of the game on the way to pulling down 10 boards.
"It has to be the best game she's played for us ever," Himmelberg said. "The shooting percentage, the career-high, breaking records, game-winning free throws. It's incredible. She made big plays when we needed them."
Esary, who had the historic performance during her senior night, is all-over the Argo record books. She reached 2,000 points a few weeks ago and is closing in on becoming the all-time scoring leader. Esary also needs just two double-doubles to set the record for most double-doubles in program history. Even with all the records, Himmelberg said the biggest part about her game is how she raises her game when the stakes increase.
"She definitely is a big-time player who shows up for big moments," he said. "There's no question about it. That's when she's at her best."
The Argos will need all the big-time performances they can get out of Esary as the team enters postseason play. As a #2 seed in the Frontier Conference women's basketball postseason tournament, the team will receive a bye in the first-round. They will play the highest seed of the two first-round winners on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. in the McLaughlin Center.
