PRESCOTT, Ariz. – The University of Providence wrestling team picked up two big wins Friday night, defeating both Vanguard and Embry-Riddle in Prescott, Ariz. The Argos (5-4) defeated Vanguard 32-13 in the first dual of the night, before taking down #19 Embry-Riddle 26-11.
"That's a good accomplishment for us today," head coach
Steve Komac said. "Those are two pretty scrappy teams. We feel great. There was plenty of ranked kids in there for both teams. We came out on top of both of them and actually opened up the score quite a bit. Going into the duals they looked like they could be won by anybody, but we opened it up and won a lot of matches tonight. We won a lot of tough matches tonight."
After getting a 6-0 start against the Lions (5-5) via a forfeit,
Joel Avila recorded a pin to give the team a 12-0 lead. The Lions won the next three matches to cut the lead to two, but
Jordan Komac defeated last year's National Runner-Up Ricky Padilla to give the Argos a 15-10 lead. The Lions cut it to two again, but
Hayden Schrull,
Liam Swanson and
KC Buday all recorded pins to solidify the victory.
In the second dual of the night, the two teams split the first six matches with the Eagles (4-2) taking an 11-10 lead.
KJ Swanson got a tight-knit 5-4 victory over Stone Aguirre to give the Argos the lead. Schrull followed that up with a 13-5 major decision to expand the lead to 17-11.
Liam Swanson snagged a 2-1 victory in the next match to secure the victory and Buday put the icing on the cake with a pin in the final match to make it 26-11.
The win showcased several victories over some of the top kids in the Cascade Collegiate Conference.
"Jordan beat the #4 kid in the country tonight in Vanguard," Komac said. "He was last year's runner-up. Jordan turned around against the next kid and beat the #11 kid in the country for Embry-Riddle. Beating a #4 and a #11 after just getting back to action is a big night for him. For him and what his goals are coming off that injury, that was a big performance tonight.
Liam Swanson is coming along for us. Buday, Avila, Schrull, those guys continue to do well and perform for us."
The wins also give the team some confidence as they prepare for the home stretch of their season.
"Both of these teams had some of the better wrestlers in the conference," Komac said. "It's great for our confidence. Success builds on success. Having success is going to help us down the road."
The team will finalize their trip with a dual against Arizona Christian Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
"We'll get some rest tonight," Komac said. "The way they're firing on all cylinders right now I think we'll be ready to go tomorrow."
