CALDWELL, Idaho – The University of Providence softball team fell in their final two games in their series against #6 Southern Oregon. The Raiders (19-5, 6-1) defeated the Argos (0-12, 0-9) 13-0 in the first game and 11-0 in the second game.
"We just couldn't bring anyone home this weekend," head coach
Joey Egan said. "We had our opportunities but we couldn't convert. Credit to Southern Oregon, they're a very good team with very talented players. It was a frustrating weekend but I'm proud of the girls. They're a resilient group and we're going to continue to get better."
The Argos found themselves down 4-0 after the first two innings of the first game, but then buckled down defensively, only allowing two over the next four innings. Entering the top of the seventh down 6-0, things began to unravel, as the team allowed seven runs in the final inning.
"We made a few mistakes and then it just snowballed from there," Egan said. "We have to do a better job of not letting one or two mistakes compound like that."
The strong batting from the Raiders continued in the second game, as they scored five runs at the top of the first two innings. They scored one more in the third inning to complete the 11-0 final.
The Argos recorded six hits in the first game, including two from first baseman
Macy Mangold. She also reached first base on a walk. As a team, the Argos left eight runners on base.
The squad will return to the field this Saturday with a pair of games against the University of Montana. The doubleheader will begin at 1:00 p.m. in Missoula.
