SALEM, Ore. – The University of Providence softball team picked up their first win of the season on Saturday, defeating Corban in the final game of their weekend series 13-9.
The Argos (1-21, 0-15) lost 7-3 in the first game of the day, despite outhitting the Warriors (15-23, 9-10) 7-3.
Sirena Rosalez led the team with three hits while
Karlie David and
McKenna Montgomery both recorded two. David, Montgomery and
Ryen Palmer each recorded an RBI in the game.
The squad recovered with an incredible second game. The team got behind early, trailing the Warriors 7-0 after the bottom of the second inning. The Argos responded with a total of seven runs of their own in the top of the third inning to even the score.
With the momentum on the side, the Argos were dealt a curveball (pun intended). A majority of her pitching staff was dealing with injures, so head coach
Joey Egan was forced to sub in rightfielder
Taylor Mathews to the mound. Mathews, who was celebrating her 22nd birthday, was exceptional in the game, allowing only two earned runs the majority of the game. Offensively the Argos put together six runs in the top of the sixth inning to take the lead for good.
"We were dealing with injuries, so we put Taylor in there to finish the game," Egan said. "She pitched a solid game. She did really well. She's got a mean changeup. We only allowed two runs while she was on the mound. It's her birthday today too so today was really special."
The Argos recorded 11 hits in the final game, with David, Mathews and Rosalez leading the way with three hits.
Azia Umphrey led the teams with three RBIs, while
Sam Hernandez, Mathews and Rosalez recorded two.
"We put up 13 runs," Egan said. "That's the most we've had all season. Just to see that many runs come through was good for confidence. They were throwing their number one pitcher too."
The Argos will look to use this as momentum for their busy week this week. They will host their rival Carroll College on Wednesday for a doubleheader before hosting Northwest in a weekend series. All games will be played in Great Falls.
"It was good to finally see all the building we've done translate to a win in the win column," Egan said. "We made a lot of errors so there's a ton of room for improvement. Hopefully this gets us fired up for Carroll on Wednesday."
The doubleheader on Wednesday against the Fighting Saints will begin at 2:00 p.m. MTN.
