Mathews Hits Walk-Off Home Run to Top #7 Yotes

GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence softball team played a tripleheader against #7 College of Idaho on Thursday. The Argos (6-34, 4-26) defeated the Yotes (37-13, 22-8) with a walk-off home run in the first game, before the Yotes got revenge in the final two contests.

The Yotes were the first team to get on the board on the day scoring a single run in the top of the third inning. However the Argos tied it an inning later in the bottom of the fourth.

The teams stayed knotted at one run entering the seventh inning, when Hannah McNerney hit a solo home run to give the Yotes a one-run lead. The Yotes got two quick outs in the bottom of the seventh, putting the Argos' backs against a wall. McKenna Montgomery was hit by a pitch at the next at-bat, sending her to first and bringing Taylor Mathews to the plate. The senior from Helena hit a walk-off home run to give the Argos the first game 3-2.

"It was an awesome moment for Taylor to have a walk-off, especially on Senior Day," head coach Joey Egan. "That's exactly who you want hitting in that scenario. That was a super fun moment to beat the #7 team in the country."

The Argos outhit the Yotes six to four in the first game with Mathews and Macy Mangold leading the team with two apiece. Montgomery pitched the entire game on the mound, recording a strikeout.

The Yotes responded in the second game. With both teams tied at one after the first, the Yotes exploded, scoring four runs in the third inning and five runs in the fourth inning on their way to a 10-1 victory. The Yotes continued that momentum in the final game of the day, beating the Argos 12-0 in the final game of the team's season.

The game marked the final game for the eight seniors on the roster. Alivia Atlee, Khalyn Hageness, Sam Hernandez, Taylor Mathews, McKenna Montgomery, Sirena Rosalez, McKenzie Staats and Jaden Williams were all recognized during a senior presentation following the final game.

"It is very sad to say goodbye to this group of seniors," Egan said. "Each one of them brings a special unique quality to this team and that is what makes this group so special. They have gone through so much adversity and faced so many challenges these past few years. I could not be prouder of this group and know that they will come out even stronger in the end."
