Shelby, Mont. - The first day of the 2022-2023 golf season began Monday for the University of Providence as the Argos competed at the MSU-Northern Invite held at the Marias Valley Golf Club in Shelby. Facing four other Frontier Conference teams, the Argos had mixed results both as teams and individuals.
Connor Mora, a junior from Great Falls leads Providence after 36 holes, firing a two-round total of 150 to tie for seventh. Mora shot rounds Monday of 76 and 74 to sit six over and six shots off the pace. Head golf coach Spencer Williams says Mora came out firing, "Connor did very well. I am very proud of him."
Other Argo men in the tourney include Trey Sharp (+19), JP Briney (+44), Trey Wasson (+62) and Craig Patera (+75). As a team, Providence is fifth at +131 after two rounds. Rocky Mountain College sits 12 over to lead the tournament. Rocky's Nolan Burzminski leads all men with an even par 144.
On the women's side, the Argos are fourth after day one after shooting +196 overall. Kielar Jones is the top Providence golfer after an opening round 79 putting her in 20th heading into day two. Kate Murack is 22nd (+23), Eve Knox is 29th (+75) and Isabell Sardenas is 30th (+81). The Rocky women are +21 and lead Montana Tech by 22 shots. Tech's Emma Woods shot even par to lead by two strokes.
Coach Williams says conditions were pretty good at Shelby, "It was a little windy, a little smoky, but the course is in great shape."
