Billings, Mont. - What a difference two weeks can make in collegiate athletics. Exactly 14 days after being shut out 5-0 at home on September 3rd, the University of Providence women's soccer team battled Rocky Mountain College on the road to a scoreless draw. From the opening kick, the Argos put more pressure on the Battlin' Bears and the defense was outstanding, including the play of Reilan Davis in goal. Davis stopped all seven shots she faced and kept Providence in the match for the full 90 minutes. The draw snapped an 11 match skid against Rocky.
The Argos had a couple of good looks early in the first half as Brittany Burman had a breakaway just 37 seconds into the match just firing wide of the net. 11 minutes later, Julia Tilton got a good look but was stopped by Rocky goal keep Mila Allison. Then just five minutes later, Ernestina Serwaa Ofori was just wide on another good look after some fancy footwork.
Davis was solid from start to finish and despite being peppered in the second half, rose to the occasion keeping Rocky off the score board and forcing a draw in the Cascade Collegiate Conference opener for both teams.
Providence Head Coach Heather Blandford says the team had been working hard the last two weeks in practice and that showed on the pitch today, "Our team is very proud of the way we played today. Earning a draw in our first conference match of the year, against a higher-ranking opponent, is a big step for our program. Getting that point against an opponent that beat us two weeks ago shows the eagerness of our team to show up every day to get better. We are looking forward to continuing to build on the strides we made today."
The Argos return to action hosting The Evergreen State Friday and Northwest University Saturday at Argo Field. Matches start both days at 11 AM. For more information, visit www.upargos.com.
