Great Falls, Mont. - The University of Providence men's soccer team was just over three minutes from victory before a late Jacen Stein goal from Northwest University (Wash.) tied things up and the teams played to a 1-1 draw Saturday in CCC (Cascade Collegiate Conference) play.
The Argos broke through in the 71st minute to break up a 0-0 match when Mika Lankhof scored from 25 yards out to put Providence up 1-0. The Eagles turned up the pressure over the next few minutes and Stein scored on a rebound to force the tie. The first half saw UP keep momentum with good defense and timely deflections, only to be matched by Northwest's intensity.
The Eagles outshot the Argos 10-8 and had four shots on goal to Providence's three. Sam Fingers stopped three shots with Michael Kot saving two. Jack Rimstad led the Argos with three shots while Elliot Misic had four shots for the Eagles. Argos head coach Will Hander says after yesterday's loss, he is proud of his team, "Proud of the way the guys battled. We bounced back well after yesterday. We had our chances, but we will take the point and keep getting prepared for next week."
Northwest sees its record move to 3-4-2, 0-2-1. Providence now stands at 0-3-1, 0-2-1. The Argos next face Southern Oregon and Oregon Tech on the road next weekend. Visit www.upargos.com for more information.
