Gilbert, Ariz., September 3, 2022 – Throughout the first three weeks of the regular season, the University of Providence volleyball team has seen itself in set after set, match after match. While the wins are not there yet, one thing is certain, this team knows how to compete. The biggest issues have been keeping a lead and closing out sets. Once again Saturday in the desert, that was the problem again as the Argos fell to Park Gilbert (Ariz.) 23-25, 25-20, 19-25, 22-25. Playing in the Phoenix Tournament, Providence opened strong and sat just a few points away from taking the opening set before the Buccaneers rallied to take the set. Providence bounced back to win the second game before stumbling in the third. The fourth set saw UP leading 16-13, but a series of quick points by Park Gilbert pushed the Bucs over the top for the victory.
A young team that is still looking for leadership on the floor once again played well in a loss. The Argos hit just .133 for the match but put up a .281 hitting percentage in the second set. Head Coach Arunas Duda says learning how to win is still something the team struggled with, "Honestly, we played pretty well today. Unfortunately, we are having a really tough time closing sets out. We had the lead late in the first and got tense and lost, won the second, tied late in the third and within one late in the fourth. We have to find a way to close out those sets and that will come through more fundamental work in practice and game opportunities."
Jenna Thorne led the way with 16 kills, adding 14 digs for another double-double. Jensyn Turner had seven kills, Bailey Christenen six and Ryann Eddins five to lead the Argos. Taylor DeVries posted 19 assists with Bella Thompson adding 16 assists and 13 digs. Christensen and Zoe Naugle each had three blocks. Adysen Burns and Taylor Christensen each were credited with 11 digs.
The Argos will enjoy Sunday in the desert before facing Arizona Christian at 12 pm Monday. For live stats and to watch, visit www.upargos.com.
