Cold shooting hurts Argo women in upset bid

Providence falls 73-41 Thursday at Carroll

HELENA, Mont. - A 12 to nothing run early in the second quarter cost the University of Providence women a chance at an upset as the Argos fell 73-41 at No. 18 Carroll College Thursday night in Frontier Conference basketball action in the Capital City.  

The Argos and Saints battled through a back and forth first quarter as Maddy Dixon and Maddie Geritz matched each other point for point for their respective teams. Each scored six points in a period that also saw the return of McKenna Reggear to the Providence lineup after missing the previous nine games. Kyndall Keller added five of her game high 15 points in the first 10 minutes of play. Providence shot 54.5% in the quarter on 6 of 11 shooting.  

With the score 17-15 Carroll after a Dixon bucket in the paint, the Saints used five points from Addi Eckstrom as part of the run to jump out to a 29-15 lead with just under five minutes remaining in the half. The Argos trailed by 16 heading into the second half.  

Brooklyn Harn tried to get the Argos back in the game with five points in the third quarter, but the team shot just 3 of 14 in the period as the Saints pulled away for the win. Harn finished the game with seven points as did Reed Hazard. Dixon scored a team-high 10 points and pulled down three rebounds. The Argos were outrebounded 36-19, including 11-5 on the offensive end which led to an 18-2 advantage in second chance points for Carroll. Providence finished the game 18 of 51 (35.3%) from the field and falls to 1-4 in Frontier play, 11-7 overall.  

In addition to Keller's 15, Geritz finished with 12 points, Eckstrom scored 10 starting in place of Kamden Hilborn who did not suit up. Carroll ended the game 27-56 from the floor (48.2%) and made 8 of 14 three-pointers to the Argos two makes from distance.  

Carroll improved to 13-5, 4-1 and will next host MSU-Northern on Saturday in Helena.  

Providence returns home for the first time in 2023 hosting No. 20 Rocky Mountain College as the second time around the conference begins. Rocky (12-5, 4-1) lost Thursday to No. 12 Montana Western 83-58, the Battlin' Bears first league loss. The Argos battled in a two-point loss back in December in Billings.
