DILLON, Mont. - The University of Providence men snapped a four-game losing skid to Montana Western with a 74-73 win Thursday night in Frontier Conference play at Dillon.
The Argos led by two at the half thanks to 12 first-half points apiece from Marcus Stephens and Davien Harris-Williams. Montana Western started the game on a 9-0 run before the Argos settled in taking a one-point lead with a Drayton Caoile bucket midway through the first period. Stephens hit two of his four three-pointers on the night in the first half as the teams traded baskets throughout.
Stephens scored 12 more in the second half but neither team could pull away. Providence would lead by as many as 10 with 7:45 remaining, but five points from Ky Kouba helped trim the deficit to three just a minute and a half later. The Argos and Bulldogs traded the lead back and forth until a jumper from Harris-Williams, the reigning Erck Hotels/Frontier Conference Player of the Week, gave Providence the lead with 2:01 left. Neither team would score again, and the Argos improved to 4-20 at Straugh Gymnasium since 2005.
Stephens led the Argos with 24 points, going 9 of 17 from the field. He also grabbed seven rebounds. Harris-Williams added 18, Sam Vining 10 with Jake Olsen just missing a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds. Providence finished the game 43.8% from the field (28-64) including 9 of 25 effort from beyond the arc.
Kouba led the Bulldogs with 19 points including five triples and pulling down 11 rebounds. Montana Western falls to 6-10 overall, 1-2 in league play and will play at MSU-Northern Saturday.
