Lugo and Vasquez Lead Argos Over Eagles

KIRKLAND, Wash. – The University of Providence men's soccer program defeated Northwest University 5-2 Friday afternoon.

Argos (7-6-2) struck first in the 24th minute when freshman Hugo Gil gained possession of the loose ball and found senior Tomeu Nebot Schmalfeld who lofted the ball over the defense for freshman Jose Vasquez who beat the goalkeeper for his 11th goal of the year.

UP scored again four minutes later when a corner kick by Schmalfeld connected with freshman Gino Badalow who headed it into the back of the net.

The Eagles (7-4-3) would respond just over a minute into the second half when a shot off a rebound went off the crossbar and past the goalkeeper to cut the Argos lead to one.

A few minutes later a corner kick by Schmalfeld went through the defense to Vasquez who buried the shot for his second goal of the game.

The Argos would extend their lead in the 77th minute when Schmalfeld's cross into the box found freshman Eduardo Sidoine who took advantage of the wide-open net.

The Eagles would score in the 88th minute but immediately after freshman Geovanni Lugo would score a goal from way outside of the box to secure the 5-2 victory.

Head coach Will Hander on his team's performance stated, "The guys did well to get the three points we needed. We didn't play as clean as we wanted but am happy for the guys to get the win and we will get ready for tomorrow."

The Argos return to action Saturday, Oct. 21 when they visit The Evergreen State College. The first touch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. in Olympia, Wash.
