Volleyball Defeats Carroll College 3-0

GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence volleyball program defeated Carroll College 3-0 Friday night.

In the first set the Fighting Saints (5-19) jumped out to a 4-2 lead but back-to-back kills by freshman Martyna Fiedler tied the match at 4. Despite a pair of service errors by the Argos they would score eight of 10 points to take a commanding 21-10 lead. Argos would continue their momentum with a kill by senior Jenna Thorne and a block by Thorne and senior Zoe Naugle to win the first set for the Argos 25-15. With Naugles block in the first set, she became the Argos all-time leader in total blocks with 336.

The second set saw the Argos score the first five points to jump out to a 5-0 lead. Carroll would respond by scoring eight of 12 points to bring the match within one, but kills by junior Nina Janjic and redshirt freshman Cabry Taylor extended the UP lead back to five. Despite a late run by the Fighting Saints, a kill by Thorne secured the second set 25-21.

Carroll got out to an early five-point lead in the third set, but the Argos would score 14 of 17 points behind kills by senior Kendra Pope, Thorne, and Janjic to take an 18-10 lead. Both sides would trade points the rest of the way until UP scored the final four points of the match to take the set 25-14 and the match 3-0.

Thorne led the way for the Argos with 10 kills and Janjic and Taylor added eight and seven, respectively. Junior Nati Slazynska had 21 assists and sophomore Bella Thompson had 19. Defensively, senior Taylor Christensen had 17 digs and Naugle added five blocks.

The Argos will be back in action Oct. 28 when they host MSU Northern. The match is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. in the McLaughlin Center.
