GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence volleyball program defeated Montana State University Northern 3-1 Saturday night.
In the first set MSU-Northern (10-13) jumped out to an early 7-4 lead but a kill by junior
Allyah Tokelau and an ace from sophomore
Bella Thompson brought the set within one. From there each side would trade points with neither team gaining an edge of more than two, bringing the match even at 23. The Argos (14-9) would score the final two points behind kills by senior
Kendra Pope and freshman
Martyna Fiedler to take the first set 25-23.
The second set was back and forth with 14 ties and neither team gained a lead by more than two throughout. With the set all tied at 22, MSUN scored the final three points to take the second set 25-22.
The third set also stayed close early with neither team gaining an edge. There would be nine ties and no leads of more than two until the Skylights scored nine of 13 points to take a 20-15 lead. UP would answer immediately scoring five of seven points to bring the match back within one. Despite MSUN being one point away from taking the set, kills by Tokelau and junior
Nina Janjic gave UP a 25-24 lead. Following a Skylight timeout, kills by Janjic and senior
Jenna Thorne secured the third set for the Argos 27-25.
In the fourth set the Argos took advantage of the Skylights mistakes jumping out to an 11-5 lead. UP would not let up scoring 14 of the final 19 points to take the fourth set 25-10 and the match 3-1.
Thorne led the way for the Argos with 14 kills and Janjic and Tokelau added 13 apiece. Junior
Nati Slazynska had 31 assists and Thompson had 22. Defensively, senior
Taylor Christensen had 25 digs and senior
Zoe Naugle had four total blocks.
The Argos will be back in action Nov. 1 when they visit Rocky Mountain College. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. in Billings, Mont.
