Argos Fall to Rocky Mountain College

Box Score BILLINGS, Mont. – The University of Providence volleyball program fell 3-2 to Rocky Mountain College Wednesday night.

The first set was back and forth with neither team gaining an edge by more than two. There would be 10 ties before the Battlin' Bears (19-9) scored four straight points to take a 14-11 lead. The Argos (14-10) would respond scoring four straight of their own behind kills by senior Jenna Thorne and freshman Martyna Fiedler. UP continued their momentum with kills by redshirt freshman Cabry Taylor and junior Nina Janjic to give the Argos a 20-18 lead. Despite a late rally by RMC, kills by senior Zoe Naugle and Fiedler secured the first set 25-22. Janjic and Thorne had four kills apiece in the first set.

In the second set the Argos got out to an early 7-4 lead, but three straight points by the Battlin' Bears tied the set at seven. Each side would trade runs but a pair of service aces by RMC gave the Battlin' Bears an 18-14 advantage. The Argos would chip into the lead with kills by Naugle and Fiedler to tie the set at 23, but RMC would score three of the last four to take the second set 26-24.

The third set also stayed close early with neither team gaining an edge. The match saw six ties until a 4-0 run by RMC gave the Battlin' Bears a 13-9 lead. RMC would not let up the rest of the way taking the third set 25-18.

The Battlin' Bears jumped out to an early 4-2 lead in the fourth set, but a pair of kills by junior Allyah Tokelau gave UP a 5-4 advantage. The Argos would build on their momentum extending their lead to five off a service ace by sophomore Bella Thompson and a block by Taylor. RMC would come storming back scoring seven of the next 10 points to bring the set within one. Each side would trade runs until the set stood even at 24. A kill by Tokelau and a block by Naugle secured the fourth set for the Argos 26-24. Tokelau had six kills in the fourth set.

In the deciding set, RMC took an 8-4 lead and would maintain that edge throughout taking the fifth set 15-10 and the match 3-2.  

The Argos will be back in action Nov. 4 when they visit Montana Western. The match is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. in Dillon, Mont.
