Men's Wrestling Visits Northwest for Season Opener

11/3/2023 9:50:00 AM

GREAT FALLS, Mont. – The University of Providence men's wrestling program begins their season this weekend with a trip to Powell, Wyo. The Argos will be competing in a dual versus Northwest College beginning at 10 a.m.

Head coach Steve Komac on the beginning of their season stated, we are very excited to begin this season with this group of guys. We have had back-to-back strong recruiting classes and some excellent returners to balance our youth with experience.

The Argos will be looking to replace the production that Joel Avila provided last season. Avila was a three-time NAIA national qualifier for the Argos. Regarding the loss of Avila this season Komac stated, "Joel won a lot of matches for us and was a key piece in the lower weight classes for our team. This is an area we recruited hard as Joel is not easy to replace. We are optimistic with some of the guys that redshirted last year and got to train with Joel as well as some of the recruits we brought in."

UP is returning a few starters from last year including redshirt seniors KC Buday, Jordan Komac, redshirt sophomore Bridger Hall, and sophomore Sawyer Hobbs. Buday, Hobbs, and Hall have each been named All-Americans with Buday taking it home twice, and Komac is a four-time national qualifier.

The Argos have a few newcomers as well with freshman Hunter Hobbs, Tristan Bremer, and Jalen Vladic who were redshirts last year. Komac on the new recruits stated, "We redshirted some very good kids last season so we could plug them into the lineup at the same time while allowing them that year of growth. We are excited to see these guys in a singlet representing us this year, their ceiling is high and they are just all around great kids as well.

After the Argos trip to Powell, they will visit Havre, Mont. for a dual versus MSU-Northern on Nov. 8. UP's first home event of the season is on Nov. 16 for a dual versus North Idaho College in the McLaughlin Center.
